Former Prince drummer Bobby Z critical after heart attack

Robert B. Rivkin, known in the music world as Bobby Z, is in critical condition after suffering a massive heart attack last weekend. The drummer played with Prince's band from 1978 to 1986.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Rivkin is currently in an unnamed Twin Cities hospital. His son, Adam, told the paper, "He had three arteries that were blocked, and the doctors on Sunday night were able to take care of two of them. They wanted him to get stronger in order to go through the final phase and take care of the third one. He's in critical condition and resting. He needs to build his strength so his heart can work on its own. Now they have him on help. That's why he's in critical condition."

Prince hired Rivkin for his first band because he wanted a white drummer to give the group racial diversity. During the early-80's, Prince's sound started to bring in more synthesized rhythm, so Rivkin learned the technology. He left the group in 1986 at the same time as Wendy & Lisa and was replaced by Sheila E.

Post-Prince, Rivkin has been active as both a drummer and a producer, helming Boy George's album Tense Nervous Heartache along with the debut album of Wendy & Lisa.
